Maui is known for its stunning natural beauty, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. If you fit in either category, consider heading to Makamakaole Stream, also known as 13 Crossings, a hiking trail in Wailuku boasting breathtaking scenery, including two waterfalls.
The team at Parrish Maui offers vacation rentals in West Maui that are just a short drive from Makamakaole Stream. To help prepare you for this amazing hike, we have put together a guide and some tips for your outdoor adventure.
Makamakaole Stream: The Basics
Makamakaole Stream is a two-mile out-and-back trail near Wailuku. The trail is considered moderate to challenging, mostly due to the rocky terrain on the back half of the hike. On this trail, hikers will cross the Makamakaole Stream, a tranquil mountain stream, 13 times, hence the nickname of 13 Crossings.
In addition to crossing the stream, hikers will also walk through a bamboo forest, come across banyan trees, and take in views of waterfalls. Makamakaole Stream showcases the breadth of Maui’s natural wonders and provides a memorable backdrop for your hike. However, be aware that you are unlikely to have this trail to yourself; Makamakaole Trail is a popular hike for locals and tourists alike, so expect company.
There is no parking lot for this trail. However, limited parking is available on the street near the trailhead. Due to the limited parking and the popularity of this hike, we recommend that you arrive early.
Makamakaole Falls Offers an Alluring Reward
At the end of Makamakaole Stream lies Makamakaole Falls, a small but beautiful waterfall with a picturesque swimming hole. Some hikers choose to cool off with a refreshing dip in the pool, where you can soak in the serene sights and sounds of the water cascading off of the falls.
Packing for Makamakaole Stream
Makamakaole Stream is not a hike to be unprepared for; due to the rocky conditions and stream crossings, wearing proper footwear is essential. We recommend wearing hiking boots for most of the hike before switching to sandals or water shoes for the final waterfall portion. Bug spray can be useful.
As always, we also recommend that you pack water and snacks. Though Makamakaole Stream is a relatively short trail, it can be challenging, so being prepared with food and water is highly recommended.
